Mining in Mozambique

Mozambique’s mining sector plays a significant role in the country’s economy despite being relatively new and with most of the potential wealth still locked beneath the surface of the earth. The growth prospects in this sector are enormous – some of the world’s largest coal deposits were recently discovered in the Tete province – and international companies from across the globe are already operating here and planning exciting future developments.

MozMin is here to help

Mining in Mozambique makes a notable contribution to the worldwide production of coal, gas, gold, tantalum, graphite, ilmenite, precious stones, and products from heavy mineral sands. Currently, most of the country’s mining and mineral processing operations are privately owned, including cement plants, aluminium smelters, and gas and oil refineries.

Mozambique boasts large deposits of ilmenite, rutile and zircon, along with copper and iron, in addition to asbestos, base metals, bentonite, cassiterite, feldspar, fluorite, gemstones, gypsum, kaolin, limestone, mica, nepheline syenite, perlite, phosphate rock, rare earths, silica sand and uranium. Current major projects are focused on heavy mineral sands, coal, and natural gas, although interest in mining is growing rapidly in Cabo Delgado, Gaza, Manica, Maputo, Nampula, Niassa, Tete, and right across to Zambezia.

Mozambique’s large scale production of natural gas and aluminium from imported raw materials is now widely recognised. Construction materials such as rock aggregates, gravel, sand, clay, limestone, marble and ilmenite are produced on a medium scale, while gold, tantalite, bauxite, diatomite, bentonite and other clays, including gemstones and sea salt, are produced on a small scale.

According to International Monetary Fund statistics, mining related activities contribute only about 2% to Mozambique’s Gross Domestic Product, pointing to the enormous potential, considerably higher than current utilisation levels, in respect of other mineral commodities.
